Description
A Maar is a volcanic funnel. It occures from a steam explosion, when hot magma comes in contact with groundwater. This explosion creates a funnel which fills with water. After many years most of this lakes run dry and get a swamp. In the Volcano Eifel in Germany between Cologne and the border zu Luxembourg there are 75 Maars and 9 of them are still filled with water. The last eruption was 11,000 years ago. The photo shows the Weinfelder Maar near the little town Daun.
In the US there are also some Maar regions. The most famous are in Alaska, in the Bering Sea and in the Fort Rock Basin in Oregon.
