Description
San Gimignano is a little town in Italy's Tuscany on a hill not far from Siena. A little Etruscan village from 300 BC expanded to a florishing medieval town on the Via Francigena to Rome. The family clans built tower houses to overbid each other in importance and influence. There were 72 of this towers but up to now only 14 survived the centuries. The highest remaining are Torre Grossa and Torre Rognosa which are more than 50 meters (170 feet) high. San Gimignano therefore often is called 'medieval Manhattan'.
This image is a view from the former now mostly destroyed fortress.
