Description
Braunfels is a town in the Lahn-Dill-County in Hesse (central Germany). It is a climatic spa and located on the German Timber-Frame Road. The little town is famous for its beautiful medieval castle.
Todays Braunfels Castle has been built from a castle built in the 13th century by the Counts of Nassau, served as of about 1260 as the Solms-Braunfels noble family's residential castle. After Solms Castle had been destroyed in 1384, Braunfels Castle became the seat of the Counts of Solms. Over the castle's more than 750-year-long history, building work was done many times. After a town and castle fire in 1679, which burnt much of Braunfels and its stately seat down, both were rebuilt into a Baroque residence. The town was given a regular marketplace, which is still preserved today and lies outside the town wall.
This imsge shows the lowest of the three gates You have to stride between the market square and the castle. Here You look out to the market square.
