Description
This image of the lower part of Myrdalsjokull was taken from the path to the Eyjafjallajokull shoulder. Under the big glacier (230 sqmi) is the gigantic ice filled caldera of Katla volcano (30 sqmi). Each eruption causes a glacier flow and the water washes away the street the nearby south coast and makes Katla the most dangerous volcano of Iceland. Only 2 weeks before I made this photo a subglacial eruption did it again: the river rose 16 ft and the bridge was destroyed again after 20 years.
