Description
The Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family is a large unfinished church in Barcelona, designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. She is together with all the other works of Gaudi in Barcelona part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated and proclaimed it a minor basilica.
In 1882 the construction started under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1883, when Villar resigned, Gaudí took over as chief architect himself combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudí devoted the remainder of his life to the project. He is buried in the crypt oh the basilica. At the time of his death less than a quarter of the project was completed. He was run down by a tram in 1926, when he was 73 years old. Today the plan is to finish it at the centenary of his death in 2026.
