Description
In the Sagrada Familia there are some signs that refer to the Holy Family. Gaudà designed several anagrams in different places on the whole site. One is for the shield on the floor of the Basilica at the centre of the crossing of the nave.
The first initials of Jesus, Mary and Joseph create the palindromic initials JMJ. The anagram is designed with limited elements and colours. The five vertical white stripes are the three central lines of the M for Mary with one J on each side for Jesus and Joseph. The J for Jesus stretches up and towards the centre, crowned with the cross of Christ, which identifies the J of Jesus. The J for Joseph stretches downwards as a kind of reflection of the first J. It is also moving towards the centre with the flower of the flowering rod that symbolises St. Joseph. The crown is the element that symbolises Mary, often depicted as a queen. In this case the crown is simplified as a central band.
