The Wachau region in lower Austria is a beautiful part of the Danube river valley. It is an UNESCO World Heritage Site for it's rich culture including the abbeys of Melk and Göttweig, old castles and the vineyard terraces. At the east end of this area on a hill south of the city Krems the Göttweig Abbey overlooks the valley. It was founded in 1083 but it's today visible baroque shape was built after a big fire in the 18th century.
