Description
This magnificently preserved bronze statue (showing the head part) is known as Xanten boy reffering to the little town where it was discovered in the Rhine river by fishermen in 1858. The naked boy whose hair is adorned with a wreath composed of acorns, ears of wheat, grapes, poppies, pines-cones and a pomegranate, originally held a tray in both hands. This identifies him as a so called "dumb waiter" of the kind that was used at Roman banquets. The boy was made in the 1st century BC and may have come from the legionary fortress of Vetera, which was pillaged during the Batavian revolt in 69 AD.
