Description
Marcus Caelius (45 BC – 9 AD) was the senior centurion (Primus pilus) in XVIII Roman Legion who was killed in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (Varus Battle), one of the biggest defeats in the Roman history.
He today is known from his commemorative stone, which was discovered in 1620 in a place which today is part of the town Xanten at the Rhine river.
